We celebrate teacher’s day on 5th September each year, which is to mark the birthday of Sarveppali Radhakrishnan, the greatest teacher in the history of India. The incredible scholar and the renowned intellectual that he was, Dr. Radhakrishnan also served as the Vice-president and second President of India. He left his legacy behind by way of Teacher’s Day, a day when we shower our regards towards our teachers in general. Here are some of the interesting facts from the life of the most revered teacher of our country:

1. Dr. Radhakrishnan was born into a Telegu Niyogi Brahmin family and his father had already thought of his profession- he wanted him to become a priest. His father was reluctant in teaching Dr. Radhakrishnan English lest sending him to school. As fate had it for the future “Best Teacher”, his father agreed to send him to school in Thiruttani.

2. Good teachers are loved by their students, and when we talk about the greatest teacher in the country, what you should know is the magnanimity of his reverence in the eyes of the students. Once he was leaving to join as a Professor in Calcutta, a flower decked carriage pulled by his students was his ride to the Mysore Railway Station.

3. He was honored by George V for his services and contributions to the field of education on June 1931. But Sarveppali Radhakrishnan opted to choose his academic title “ Doctor” than this title.

4. He won the Templeton Prize in 1975, for promoting the notion of “a universal reality of God that embraced love and wisdom for all people”. He donated all the award money to Oxford University. In return, Oxford, in the memory of this loving teacher of India, set up a scholarship by his name, known as “Radhakrishnan Chevening Scholarships”.

5. His son, Mr. Sarvepalli Gopal is a renowned historian. Former Test Cricketer VVS Laxman is his great grand nephew.
