China has well-ordered North Korean companies in the country to shut down by January of the upcoming year as it applies UN sanctions imposed following Pyongyang's sixth nuclear test, the commerce ministry said on Thursday. The ministry said the companies, including joint ventures with Chinese firms, have 120 days to close from the date the United Nations resolution was adopted, September 11. The announcement comes days after China confirmed that it will apply another major part of the sanctions: a limit on exports of refined petroleum products to North Korea starting October 1 and a ban on textiles from its neighbor. China's application of UN sanctions is particularly biting for North Korea. Beijing is Pyongyang's main ally and trading partner, responsible for around 90 percent of the outsider nation's commerce. The US has pressed China to use its economic leverage to strong-arm North Korea into giving up its nuclear ambitions. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson wil...

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe dissolved the lower house of parliament Thursday, paving the way for a snap election that is expected to be held October 22. The speaker of the house, Tadamori Oshima, read the statement of dissolution. Lower house members all stood up and chanted “banzai” three times in a dissolution ritual, then rushed out of the assembly hall. Abe is widely seen as trying to reconsolidate his grip on power within the ruling Liberal-Democratic Party, so he can extend the term of his premiership next year. The dissolution of the more powerful of Japan’s two-chamber parliament comes more than a year before required by law. The ruling party, though, faces a growing challenge from a new party launched by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike this week. The Party of Hope has energized some voters, and is gaining renegade lawmakers from the main opposition party. Minutes after the dissolution, Abe made a fiery speech to party members. He said he is seeking a public mandate on ...

Accused of raping his own female followers, Gurmeet Ram Rahim had of late started fancying high profile models and film actresses. After facing allegations of exploiting Dera girls, Ram Rahim, according to his relative Bhupinder Singh Gora, would either invite high-profile girls to Sirsa or temporarily shift to Mumbai to spend 15-20 days every month. And all this was arranged by Honeypreet. Gora told India Today TV that Ram Rahim would spend most of his time in the company of women. "He would openly talk about naked sex workers in the presence of lakhs of female followers," he said. Ram Rahim defined love in three ways - mizazi (one-night stand), hakiki (soulful love) and ruhani (divine love). "Former Congress leader Harminder Singh Jassi had once told me that we should avoid sending our own women in front of Ram Rahim as he might exploit married women too," Gora said. The Alternative for Germany party has pledged to use its platform in parliament to “reclaim the country and its people.” The AfD won nearly 14 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election, giving them 94 seats. Many believed the turmoil of the 20th century had immunized Germany from a return of far-right politics, but Sunday’s result proved them wrong. For the group’s opponents who gathered to protest the result in Berlin, the Alternative for Germany’s anti-migrant agenda has parallels with the Nazis’ rise to power. “It is the first time since after the war that a racist and neo-Nazi party is in parliament,” said one protester. “So that is really worrying to us. And this reminds everyone of 1933.” Jewish groups were among those expressing fear over the results. The AfD’s co-leader, Alexander Gauland, has previously said Germans should be proud of their military’s achievements in World War II. However, at a news conference Monday, he denied the party is racist. Gauland said there is ...

The Delhi Soccer Association has failed to perform its primary duty -- running football in the state properly. The DSA did not hold the senior men’s league in the 2016, effectively ruining the aspiration of budding footballers in the national capital region to make it big in a sport that has a fairly strong commercial interest. When officials continue to hold on to their positions for long periods and manipulate affiliated units, they become like dead wood. PSG made it a perfect six wins in six games to start the Ligue 1 season with the help of two Lyon own goals. Ligue 1 leaders Paris St Germain were rescued by two second-half own goals as they extended their 100 percent start to the season with an unconvincing 2-0 victory over Lyon. It looked like being a frustrating night for PSG and their expensively assembled frontline of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani until Lyon defender Marcelo inadvertently turned home a cross from substitute Giovani Lo Celso 15 minutes from time. Uruguayan striker Cavani then had a penalty saved by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, before visiting defender Jeremy Morel put the result beyond doubt by diverting the ball into his own net in the 86th minute. As Manchester City prepare to launch their 2017-18 assault on the Champions League, manager Pep Guardiola will be well aware of the pressure facing him to make serious advances towards the oft-stated designs of the club's ambitious owners. The money lavished on player upgrades this summer speaks volumes for the ambition of Guardiola, the club and Sheikh Mansour. Champions League success ranks as highly as winning the Premier League. Despite a sticky start in the competition, when tough draws came thick and fast, City's steady progress since 2008 means the club are now in a good position to press on in their attempt to beat the semifinal reached in 2015-16. That match, woefully tossed away without the semblance of a proper fight against Real Madrid, represents City's only foray beyond the round of 16 so far. VIENNA – The head of the U.N. agency monitoring Iran's compliance with a deal crimping its nuclear program says Tehran is honoring the agreement — an assessment that the White House is questioning as it mulls upping the pressure on the Islamic Republic. Yukiya Amano of the International Atomic Energy Agency says Monday that the terms Iran accepted "are being implemented." The U.S. administration has faced two 90-day certification deadlines to state whether Iran was meeting the conditions needed to continue enjoying sanctions relief under the deal and has both times backed away from a showdown. But U.S. President Donald Trump more recently has said he does not expect to certify Iran's compliance again. The next deadline is in mid-October. Amano spoke in Vienna at the start of a 35-nation IAEA board meeting.

On Tuesday, Japan’s Minister of Defense said that North Korea’s sixth and most recent nuclear test was more powerful than originally thought, as the blast possessed a yield much larger than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima in 1945. North Korea detonated what it described as a hydrogen bomb Sunday at its Punggye-ri nuclear test site, claiming that the weapon was designed for a long-range missile. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO) originally said the bomb had a 70-kiloton estimated yield, but on Tuesday Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera told reporters that an upgraded revision by CTBTO estimated the yield to around 120 kilotons. This would make Pyongyang’s explosive eight times more powerful than the bomb the US dropped in Hiroshima, Japan, at the close of World War II. That explosion had a yield equivalent to 15 kilotons of TNT. "We can figure out that the nuclear test displayed a fairly high capability," Onodera said, according t...
