Jose Mourinho has expressed sympathy for Juan Mata after the Manchester United midfielder missed the pre-season friendly with Real Madrid.
The Spain international was hurt in the second match of United’s tour of the United States.
During the game against Real Salt Lake he came under a heavy challenge from Sebastian Saucedo, forcing him off just 14 minutes after he came on a second-half substitute.
Mata was unable to feature in the 2-0 win over Manchester City on Thursday and again was not even on the bench for Sunday night’s match with Real Madrid.

Speaking ahead of the game Mourinho spoke about his absent playmaker.
‘I feel sorry for Juan Mata not being able to train or play,’ he told MUTV. ‘But in a long pre-season tour to have only one player out and all the others training and getting good evolution until now has been very good.’

Mourinho selected a somewhat weakened starting XI to play Real Madrid and admitted prior to kick-off he was more concerned about Manchester United’s UEFA Super Cup meeting against the Champions League holders in a couple of weeks.
‘Of course, we like to win, of course we try to do it, but it is not the most important thing. We have to play them [Real Madrid] again in a couple of weeks and then it is important to win – but today is not about that.’
