A fresh controversy to grip the Sabarimala Temple this year is a picture tweeted by T G Mohandas, the convener of BJP’s intelligence cell that shows some women being spotted in the sanctum sanctorum. This controversy comes close on heels when many women launched a campaign called #Readytowait which meant that they would wait until they hit menopause to be allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum to pay respects to Lord Ayyappa who is considered as a ‘naishtika brahmachari’ (perennial celibate) by devotees. The picture which went viral on the social media with claims like the women in the picture do not look like they were 50 led the authorities to launch an investigation into the matter.
The Sabarimala temple located in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district does not allow the entry of women between the ages of 10-50. Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendran ordered the Devaswom Vigilance to initiate an investigation into the claims that a Kollam-based businessman was granted special privileges for conducting darshan at the shrine and the women allegedly tagged along with him. With strict adherence to the age limit imposed on women, some feel this viral picture has been doctored to raise a storm. Here’s the picture that went viral on the social media.
