India and Israel were born as independent nations within nine months of each other in 1947 and 1948. Partition was a common feature of their creation, as modern nation states. On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion, the head of the Jewish Agency, proclaimed the establishment of the State of Israel and joined the United Nations. Then American President Harry S. Truman recognized the new nation on the same day.

They form the Water Court of Valencia, a millennial institution in Spain. In just a few minutes and without any paperwork, this tribunal settles irrigation conflicts that erupt in the fertile plain that surrounds Valencia, Spain's third largest city, a Mediterranean region of orchards. UN cultural body UNESCO has included the court — which bills itself as "the oldest institution of justice in existence in Europe" — on its list celebrating the world's "intangible cultural heritage" which deserves protection.
