The person who at the height of his power refused to bow down to anyone had to make a mere request to Dadda Major Dhyanchand. Legends

abound that during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Hitler was so impressed by Dhyanchand that he asked him to stay back in Germany and offered the position of ‘Colonel’. Of course, Dhyanchand refused, for being a true Indian, only the benefit of the country was at his heart and not personal gains.

A few years ago while taking a Shatabdi train from Delhi to Bhopal, my compartment was full of foreign tourists, mostly European. As we neared

Jhansi, we saw the statue of a man holding hockey stick. A foreigner asked her compatriot, “Who is this man?” The reply was, “He is Pele of India!”

That is Major Dhyanchand for sports lovers – Wizard of Hockey.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the wizard on Sunday in radio program Mann Ki Baat and said that Dhyanchand’s contribution to hockey is unmatched. He also said that India will be celebrating National Sports Day on August 29, which is the birth anniversary of the legendary hockey player. PM Modi said Dhyanchand is a true example of sportsman spirit and patriotism.

It is indeed great for the PM to remember and salute a national hero. But will he give the award to Dhyanchand that his fans have been

asking for long – A Bharat Ratna?

A person of Dhyanchand’s caliber has risen above sports to be a national icon, an inspiration to millions of his followers. It was following his legacy that Indian hockey rose to the zenith clinching eight Olympic gold medals. In the 1936 Games, after beating Hungary 4-0, USA 7-0 and Japan 9-0,

India was playing Germany in the final of the Berlin Olympics. Dhyanchand had a fever before that final, but he still played. He scored 6 goals as Indian trounced Germany  8-1 to win the gold. It is also said that Dhyanchand, who was leading the Indian contingent, refused to salute the Fuehrer Hitler. One can see in the rare video, Dhyanchand's brilliance!

Dhaynchand has been selected for various sports awards, but his family and a huge legion of fans believe that won’t do justice to his contribution. The demand is for Bharat Ratna which befits a person of his stature and contribution.

Dhyanchand’s son and a terrific hockey player himself, Ashok Kumar has said that not getting the deserved award pinches the family very much. The question is, will our government relent and honor this hero of Indian spirit and achievements?
