The person who at the height of his power refused to bow down to anyone had to make a mere request to Dadda Major Dhyanchand. Legends abound that during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Hitler was so impressed by Dhyanchand that he asked him to stay back in Germany and offered the position of ‘Colonel’. Of course, Dhyanchand refused, for being a true Indian, only the benefit of the country was at his heart and not personal gains. Image:NewsNviews A few years ago while taking a Shatabdi train from Delhi to Bhopal, my compartment was full of foreign tourists, mostly European. As we neared Jhansi, we saw the statue of a man holding hockey stick. A foreigner asked her compatriot, “Who is this man?” The reply was, “He is Pele of India!” That is Major Dhyanchand for sports lovers – Wizard of Hockey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the wizard on Sunday in radio program Mann Ki Baat and said that Dhyanchand’s contribution to hockey is unmatched. He also said that India ...

Over 290 children have died at the hospital from August 1 till August 28, including at least 77 from Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES). In the last few weeks, accusations of the now suspended Dr Kafeel Khan, then head of the encephalitis ward in the Baba Raghav Das (BRD) Medical College, busy running a private clinic, is seen as one of the reasons why the tragic deaths occurred. MOSCOW – The Russian military says major war games set for next month will not threaten anyone. The Zapad (West) 2017 maneuvers organized jointly by Belarus and Russia have raised NATO concerns. Some alliance members, including the Baltic states and Poland, have criticized Moscow for a lack of transparency and questioned Moscow's intentions. Russia-West relations have been badly strained over fighting in eastern Ukrainian. Russia's Deputy Defense Minister, Lt. Gen. Alexander Fomin, told Tuesday's briefing that Russia will invite foreign observers to the drills. He said the maneuvers in Belarus and Western Russia on Sept. 14-20 will involve 5,500 Russian and 7,200 Belarusian troops, about 70 aircraft, 250 tanks and 200 artillery systems and 10 navy ships. Fomin rejected what he described as Western "myths about the so-called Russian threat."

There is one iconic shot of badminton legend Lee Chong Wei that stops the heart a wee bit more than the full-throttle jump smash where he is four feet up in air. It’s the one where he scurries chasing the shuttle with his back to the net. The run abruptly ends with a flat backhand flick mid-stride over the net — almost bat blind to where it might land, as he turns on his heel in a jiffy and stands ready for the next shot. It worked beautifully on Tuesday for a fleeting few seconds — and gave a stadium the sand-in-hand hope that the Malaysian legend could turn back time. It didn’t end in tears because Chong Wei has perfected the tight-lipped, dignified, smiling acceptance after losing 7 out of 7 finals (3 Olympics and 4 World Championships). But short of a meltdown, it all ended in the most heartbreaking fashion as Frenchman Brice Leverdez won 21-19, 22-24, 21-17 in 75 minutes bringing the stadium to a mooring silence as a lifetime of the legend’s struggles to win the big titles flash...

TORONTO: Do you often forget carrying your keys or umbrella with you while stepping out of your house? A simple memory trick may help! Imagining an action that connects two objects may help people overcome certain kinds of memory problems, a study suggests. Thinking about an action between two objects - like an umbrella being lodged in the door lock - and a potential consequence, such as not being able to lock the door, could help people improve their memory for relationships with other objects, researchers said. The strategy - termed "unitization" - could be used in personalised memory rehabilitation to help older adults and those with amnesia bypass gaps in their abilities, said Jennifer Ryan, senior scientist at Baycrest's Rotman Research Institute in Canada. "Previous research has shown that imagining two objects fusing into one will help people work around these memory deficits; but our work demonstrated that understanding therelationship between the two it...

Raja Ram (Pakistan): The rape of a teenage girl in revenge for a crime committed by her brother has left residents of Raja Ram in central Pakistan shaken and questioning a deeply entrenched system of village justice. Last month, a council of village elders ordered the rape of the 16-year-old victim after her brother was accused of raping a 12-year-old girl. The ruling highlighted the role such councils -- known as panchayats, or jirgas -- play in the lives of many rural Pakistanis, who see the country’s courtrooms as a distant presence. The councils have traditionally enjoyed broad support, thanks to their ability to offer immediate justice, compared to courts that can take years to settle a criminal case, and as much as a decade to resolve a civil dispute. But the recent ruling, which allowed a rape victim’s brother to sexually assault another innocent girl, has unsettled Raja Ram, home to some 3,000 people. “May God have mercy, it was such a strange day and it was such a big in...
