"I will tell you we're proud of it," he said. "And when I go around, there are so many people that say thank you. You saved the sovereignty of our country." "And maybe we'll be back into it someday, but it will be on better terms," he vowed. "It will be on fair terms." The overall prize purse of this I-League would increase to Rs 2.75 crore should a suggestion of the clubs playing this season’s competition be approved. Increasing the number of foreigners to eight per team was also among the raft of proposals made to the All India Football Federation (AIFF) by representatives of eight clubs in a meeting in New Delhi on Thursday. It will still be less than one-fifth of the prize money offered for the Indian Super League (ISL) which offered Rs 15 crore last term but a rise of Rs 50 lakh in a season where the leagues would run concurrently from November. And it isn’t the only concession the AIFF could have to make. Portugal's Confederations Cup semi-final defeat to Chile brought yet more VAR controversy as a clear penalty for La Roja was not given by the television officials during extra-time. Substitute Francisco Silva was felled by West Ham defender Jose Fonte during the second half of the additional period, but the referee awarded a goal-kick. Replays showed Fonte clearly stood on the foot of Silva as he went through on goal. The video assistant referees are able to notify the on-pitch official if a blatant error has occurred, as was the case, but play continued with no spot kick being awarded. There were penalties eventually, however, as both sides failed to find the net after two hours of football. Ronaldo Nazario says he is "almost certain" Cristiano Ronaldo will stay with Real Madrid. The Portugal international has been linked with moves to former club Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain after reports indicated he wanted to leave Madrid due to his unhappiness at scrutiny of his tax affairs in Spain. Ronaldo, 32, has denied that he defrauded Spanish tax authorities out of €14.7million in image rights. 'I know Cristiano is angry but I think he'll stay' But Brazil icon Ronaldo, who won two LaLiga titles while spending five years of his career at the Santiago Bernabeu, believes his namesake provides too many goals to Madrid for the European champions to contemplate allowing his exit. "I'm almost certain that Cristiano Ronaldo will stay," Ronaldo said to Gazzetta dello Sport. "When someone scores 50 goals a year [it] is too much certainty for a team to give up. "I don't think there is a team that can deal with it bett...

Liverpool have not made a fresh approach for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, with the 23-year-old’s Arsenal future still uncertain. The England international is in the final year of his current terms with the Gunners, who have opened discussions over a new deal understood to be worth around £100,000 a week. However, there has been little progress in settling on an agreement, with the player wanting guarantees over his status in the squad as well as to regularly start in his preferred central midfield role. Talks have also dragged as the north Londoners prioritise securing Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez - both out of contract in June 2018 - to lucrative extensions. With neither close to committing, Arsenal has been left in limbo. The Chile international is a chief target for Manchester City and is also coveted by Bayern Munich. There is a feeling that pressure is being put on Arsenal to accelerate negotiations with Oxlade-Chamberlain and meet his demands as links with Chelsea and Pep Gu...

Madrid, June 26: A major forest fire in southern Spain has forced the evacuation of more than 1,500 people from homes, campsites and hotels. The blaze broke out on Saturday night near Huelva in the Andalusia region. Emergency services had deployed 11 planes, 10 helicopters and dozens of land vehicles against the flames in a joint military-civilian operation. About 750 people are being housed temporarily in sports centres. Environment Minister of the Andalusia regional government, Jose Fiscal said on Sunday that the fire has likely to have been caused by arson. Meanwhile, the flames have reached the protected zone around a national park famed for its biodiversity, with strong heat and wind hampering fire crews’ efforts to bring it under control. The mass evacuation came as Spain seeks to avoid the human tragedy seen in neighbouring Portugal where a forest fire claimed over 60 lives last week. As makeshift shelters are provided, fears are growing for the Doñana National Park, a UNESC...

SEOUL: South Korea marked the anniversary of the start of the 1950-53 Korean War on Sunday with a call for the North to halt development of its missiles and nuclear programmes. On June 5, a number of countries, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt, cut diplomatic ties with Qatar and embargoed all sea, air and land traffic to the country, accusing Doha of supporting terrorist groups, particularly the Muslim Brotherhood terrorist movement, as well as of interfering in other countries' domestic affairs. If there’s one thing Alexis Sanchez doesn’t need it’s a helping hand in front of goal. His Arsenal team-mate Shkodran Mustafi was however kind enough to oblige with the kind of gift that simply doesn’t go unpunished with world-class players like Alexis around. And so against Germany the 28-year-old added his 38th international goal for Chile, an all-time record. When you think of the quality that Chile have boasted up front in the past such as Marcelo Salas and Ivan Zamorano you can appreciate the impeccably high standards that Alexis has now set. He never shirks the challenge of turning out for his country – much to the chagrin of his club manager Arsene Wenger, who’d no doubt prefer to see him rest. Rest is one thing Alexis hasn’t done for any of the past four summers. He played the 2014 World Cup in Brazil before consecutive Copas America first in his homeland and then in the United States last summer. Chile won both. Now he’s back in this Confederations Cup – a tune-up for the...

IN these times of acute famine in dialogue between India and Pakistan, now in its fifth year of suspension following the beheading of an Indian soldier in January 2013, it was gratifying that at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meet at Astana, Kazakhstan, recently, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Narendra Modi shook hands and exchanged pleasantries. But sadly, that's only as far as they went, a full 18 months after the two-strand Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue format was worked out on the sidelines of the Paris Climate Change talks in December 2015. That one was a real quickie because within days, the two NSAs and the two Foreign Secretaries were meeting at Bangkok to enable External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj to attend the Heart of Asia conference in Islamabad on December 9, proving that where there's a will, there's a way. It was also on the sidelines of the 15th SCO summit at Ufa in July 2015 that bilateral talks were held. At Astana, Modi could easily...

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In its last days in office, US President Barack Obama's administration was reminiscent of the Soviet Communist Party's main body Politbureau whose members used to dole out awards to one another, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in an interview with US director Oliver Stone. Shortly before leaving the office, Obama awarded Vice President Joe Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest award of the United States. "Frankly speaking, I don’t want to hurt anyone, somehow insult anyone, but what was happening in the last days [of Obama administration] looked like the Soviet Central Committee of the CPSU’s [Communist Party of the Soviet Union] Politburo to me when they awarded one another medals and stars. Especially when they awarded one another medals. Honestly, it was very funny," Putin said. In the movie, Putin speaks against the background of images of Obama awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Biden. "At ...

The White House has two new occupants: US First Lady Melania Trump and her son Barron have finally moved in to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Six months after President Donald Trump arrived, the Slovenia-born former model and the couple’s 11-year-old son joined him last night, an aide to the First Lady told AFP. The pair had previously stayed in New York so that Barron could complete the school year. He is expected to attend St. Andrews Episcopal school, just outside Washington, in the 2017-2018 session. Before reaching the capital Melania and Barron descended the steps of Air Force One alongside President Trump at Joint Base Andrews, with the youngster — decked in a tee-shirt that read ‘The Expert’ — playing with a fidget spinner. Melania’s parents had joined them for the short flight from Bedminster, New Jersey, where Trump had spent the weekend at his golf course. The phoney bombs were simply disposable water bottles wrapped in silver and black tape and attached to leather belts, although they were designed to create "maximum fear", police say. Attackers Khuram Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba each wore one of the bogus explosive devices when they launched a van and knife rampage that killed eight people and injured dozens more. Metropolitan Police Commander Dean Haydon on Sunday praised the bravery of the police officers and members of public who tackled the three - despite the possibility they could have been killed in an explosion. "I have not seen this tactic in the UK before where terrorists create maximum fear by strapping fake explosives to themselves," he said. "Anyone who saw them on the night would have thought they were genuine." Butt, 27, Zaghba, 22 and Redouane, 30, were still wearing the belts when they were shot dead by armed officers within eight minutes of their marauding attack beginn...

Adam Purinton, a Kansas City man who had killed an Indian and left two others injured in February, was indicted on hate crime charges, the United States Justice Department said on Friday. A federal grand jury heard the case, in which Purinton had yelled “get out of my country” before shooting at two Indian men, Srinivas Kuchibhotla and Alok Madasani, in a bar on February 22. A bystander, Ian Grillot, had tried to intervene and was injured as well. The judgment noted that Purinton had shot Kuchibhotla and Madasani because of their “actual and perceived” race, color, religion and national origin, The Guardian reported. It also said that the crime was premeditated, and that Purinton had violated federal firearms laws. Kuchibhotla had died in hospital soon after the shooting, causing widespread outrage and prompting the Indian government to seek an explanation from the US administration. This bumps the number of Fukushima residents diagnosed with thyroid cancer up to 152. Although many times higher than the national average, the thyroid cancer rates are "unlikely" to have been increased by the reactor accident, according to vice chair of Fukushima's medical association Hokuto Hoshi. "Those thyroid cases have been found because we conducted the survey, not because of the radiation," concurred Akira Ohtsuru, a radiologist who examined many of the patients. "The survey has caused over-diagnosis." One of those suspected of having cancer is a 4-year-old boy who hadn't even been conceived yet when his parents fled Fukushima. The prefectural government has been conducting thyroid checkups on evacuees every year since 2013. The number of cases continuously rises every time they do so: five additional cases in 2014 and two additional ones in May 2015. This means more and more evacuees are metastasizing the illness.
