German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Sunday visited the IIT-Madras and interacted with start-ups from the prestigious institution. The IIT-Madras was established with assistance from his country. Steinmeier took time to interact with start-ups that have designed solar-electric hybrid three wheelers, an innovative wheelchair for people with disability and elderly; 3D printers with special focus on carbon fiber products; and compact underwater robots that can conduct environmental survey. The start-ups, who had designed their products at the IIT-Madras Incubation Cell, gave a demonstrations to the German president. Sources said he was "impressed" with the start-ups and lauded them for their contribution to science and technology. Bharathiar University Vice-Chancellor A Ganapathy, arrested on charges of demanding and accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from an aspirant for the post of an assistant professor, was remanded in judicial custody till February 16 by a special court here on Sunday. Dharmaraj, a Professor at the university who was arrested for allegedly brokering the deal, was also sent to judicial custody. Ganapathy was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) on Saturday for allegedly accepting Rs 30 lakh as bribe from one Suresh for the post of assistant professor. Following a 12-hour search and interrogation at their offices and residences, Ganapathy and Dharmaraj were taken to the Government Hospital for a medical check-up last night and produced before the judge of Special Court of Prevention of Corruption Act John Mino, in the early hours today. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry earlier slammed the plan to expand Israeli settlements and called for international institutions to confront the move. Israel has intensified the construction of settlements in the West Bank, the Palestinian news agency Ma'an reported. According to the report, 15 new settlement housing units as well as new roads are planned to be built in the area, to the west, south and east of the Ahia settlement in the Palestinian village of Jalud. More agricultural lands are reportedly being bulldozed in the area to clear the construction site. Ghassan Daghlas, the Palestinian official in charge of monitoring the Israeli settlement policy in the northern part of the West Bank, told Ma'an that the new settlement expansion in Ahia included the bulldozing of lands and the construction of infrastructure in the settlement of Amihai, 1 kilometer to the southwest of Ahia. New Delhi: In an appalling incident, a pregnant woman was punched repeatedly in the stomach, her head was banged against the wall for touching the bucket of an upper cast Thakur. According to sources, the incident occurred on the morning of October 15, when Savitri Devi, a Dalit woman accidentally ‘touched’ a bucket belonging to Anju, an upper caste Thakur while collecting garbage from homes in Uttar Pradesh’s Bulandshahr district. The wire with reference to Indian Express, has quoted Savitri’s neighbour Kusuma Devi, as saying ‘Anju stormed towards her, punched her repeatedly in the stomach and banged her head on a wall. The National Security Agency may restore spying program given the latest amendments. WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Senate Intelligence Committee has approved in a 12-3 vote, the renewal of Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), something that could allow the National Security Agency's (NSA) to relaunch its online surveillance program. The committee's vote took place on Tuesday in a closed session. According to media reports, the lawmakers voted in favor of Senator Mark Warner's amendment, which proposes that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) should submit a request to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court if it obtains information on US citizens it wants to look into. Illegal hacking methods allegedly used by the FBI to obtain evidence and expose users of an international abuse website have stirred a legitimacy debate in Norway. According to the Norwegian daily Adresseavisen, the FBI used illegal data gathering methods against local users of a cloaked website to reveal their IP addresses and unveil their identities. The illegal hacking reportedly led to dozens of arrests. Earlier this year, seven men were arrested in Norway in connection with an investigation into an international abuse website. Recently, however, it transpired that the scope of the case in Norway alone is broader than initially thought. The country's National Criminal Investigation Service (Kripos) announced that charges have been brought against 43 Norwegians as a result of the ongoing investigation. This comes at least three days after the Allahabad High Court acquitted them of charges of their daughter's murder, setting aside the CBI court's earlier order, in connection with the double murder case that shook the nation in 2008.
