Washington, Apr 29 (PTI) In yet another provocative behaviour, Pyongyang fired a ballistic missile but it did not leave North Korean territory, the Pentagon has confirmed, terming it as a failed attempt. "The US Pacific Command detected what we assess was a North Korean missile launch at 10:33 AM Hawaii time APR 28. The ballistic missile launch occurred near the Pukchang airfield," Dave Benham, PACOM spokesman said in a statement. "The missile did not leave North Korean territory," Benham said. The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America, he said. "US Pacific Command stands behind our steadfast commitment to the security of our allies in the Republic of Korea and Japan," Benham said. According to reports, the missile was likely a medium- range KN-17 ballistic missile. .

China said on Wednesday it had expressed serious concern to Washington and Seoul after the U.S. military started moving parts of its controversial THAAD anti-missile defence system to a deployment site in South Korea. Speaking at a daily news briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said China urged the U.S. and South Korea to withdraw the system. Seoul and Washington say the sole purpose of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system is to defend against North Korean missiles, but China is concerned the system's powerful radar can penetrate its territory and undermine its security and has repeatedly expressed opposition to it.

China's first domestically built aircraft carrier is seen during its launch ceremony at Dalian in Liaoning province on April 26, 2017. (Reuters) China on Wednesday launched its second aircraft carrier, the first one to be built entirely at home, boosting its naval capabilities against the backdrop of concerns that the country is flexing its muscles in disputed waters such as the South China Sea. The 70,000-tonne warship, decorated with red flags and ribbons, was transferred from a dry dock into the water during the launch ceremony at Dalian shipyard in northeastern Liaoning province. The giant vessel slid into the water after a ribbon was cut and a champagne bottle was broken on its bow as steam whistles from nearby ships went off. The Type 001A vessel, yet to be named, is China’s second aircraft carrier. The first was the Liaoning, which was made in the erstwhile Soviet Union and was extensively refurbished before being commissioned in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (...

MOSCOW (Sputnik), Tommy Yang — US President Donald Trump is unlikely to launch a preemptive strike against North Korea despite his hawkish rhetoric and numerous threats of military actions after apparently convincing China to cooperate on the issue, experts told Sputnik. In his most recent telephone conversation with the US president on Monday morning, Chinese President Xi Jinping once again expressed his willingness to cooperate on North Korea.

A fresh controversy to grip the Sabarimala Temple this year is a picture tweeted by T G Mohandas, the convener of BJP’s intelligence cell that shows some women being spotted in the sanctum sanctorum. This controversy comes close on heels when many women launched a campaign called #Readytowait which meant that they would wait until they hit menopause to be allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum to pay respects to Lord Ayyappa who is considered as a ‘naishtika brahmachari’ (perennial celibate) by devotees. The picture which went viral on the social media with claims like the women in the picture do not look like they were 50 led the authorities to launch an investigation into the matter. The Sabarimala temple located in Kerala’s Pathanamthitta district does not allow the entry of women between the ages of 10-50. Earlier today, Windows Central leaked a document detailing Microsoft’s grand plan to take on the Chromebook. The company is reportedly releasing a variant of its main OS called Windows 10 Cloud or Windows 10 S, which can only run apps downloaded from the Windows Store. These can be legacy apps, mind you, but they can only be downloaded from the official Windows Store. In doing so, Microsoft is able to better regulate which apps users download and emphasize software optimized for low power consumption. Considering Microsoft is holding an event on May 2 that’s focused on education – and that Chromebooks have become immensely popular in schools – Windows 10 Cloud seems practically a given. But taking on the Chromebook is not going to be easy.

New Delhi: Hinting at sabotage behind the Rajya Rani Express derailment, the Railways on Saturday said defects in the track could be due to "extraneous factors" as they could not develop suddenly.A three-foot portion of the railway track was found missing, the police had said earlier. "The track was tested on February 27 using ultrasonic flaw detectors (USFD) and no defect was found. So, the possibility of involvement of extraneous factors in causing damage to the track cannot be ruled out," said a source in the railway ministry. The next USFD test of the track is due on April 27 as the automatic test of railway tracks is done every two months. Track fracture is either caused by poor maintenance or there can also be man-made factors which can be termed as "extraneous" or "sabotage". Besides, the source said, five trains had passed over the track prior to the ill-fated Rajya Rani Express and the loco pilots of those trains had not reported a...

London [UK], April 12 (ANI): British scientists have found sarin gas samples taken from a site of a recent chemical gas attack in Syria. Britain's UN Ambassador Sir Matthew Rycroft informed the United Nation Security Council (UNSC) that the samples taken from the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun and analysed by British scientists had tested positive for sarin or a sarin-like substance, reports the Independent. It is generally considered a weapon of mass destruction "The United Kingdom, therefore, shares the U.S. assessment that it is highly likely that the regime was responsible for a sarin attack on Khan Sheikhoun on April 4," said Rycroft.
